MnSEED Seed Keeping events are happening Fall 2022

Join us to hone your seed keeping skills!

MnSEED is offering a series of seed saving events in 2022 that provide opportunities to collect, process, and learn about native plants & their seeds! Join MnSEED community in gathering locally adapted seeds from area native plants for purposes of sharing back through swaps, distributions and events. Learn seed saving practices to help ensure viable seeds that come true to plant type. Participants will learn from each other and have the opportunity to save seeds for themselves.

To find more information about MnSEED, see https://northerngardener.org/mn-seed-project/ for webinars, resource links and the MnSEED  iNaturalist Project.

MnSEED is a collaboration between Como Community Seed Library, the Minnesota State Horticultural Society and St Paul garden educator, Stephanie Hankerson. The Capitol Region Watershed District and Lawns to Legumes  sponsors 2022 Mnseed Activities in part.

Seed Collection Events

Seed harvesting events will involve identifying natives, checking to be sure seeds are mature, collecting seedheads, and properly documenting the collected plants. We will also cover seed storage practices, and preview how seed cleaning is done. Register for your spot here: https://northerngardener.org/mn-seed-project/.

(For community members in the Midway and Frogtown neighborhood participation at this event is covered by the Lawns to Legumes grant awarded to Hamline Midway Coalition in partnership with Frogtown Green. If you live or work in these St. Paul neighborhoods you can attend these events for free! Contact me for the code)

Seed Processing at Festivals

Stop in while visiting fairs and festivals! MnSeed will have hands-on seed processing at a series of festivals in 2022.  Drop-by to try separating seeds from other plant material. A number of techniques will be shown that can be applied to a variety of types of seed such as  threshing, sieving, and winnowing. Useful tools and techniques to accomplish seed processing will be available and demonstrated. Our MnSEED team can also answer questions about native plants, seed starting, pollinators, seed storage practices, seed viability testing methods and more. All visitors can take seeds home for their own use.
